Examining the necessity of problem diagrams using MOOC AB experiments
Earlier research on problem solving suggested that including a diagram in a physics problem brings little, if any, benefit to students’ problem solving success. In 6 AB experiments conducted in our MOOC, we tested the usefulness of problem diagram on 12 different physics problems, collecting over 8000 student responses in total. We found that including a problem diagram that contains no additio...

We present results from two treatment / control experiuments in the 8.MReV: Mechanics ReView massive open online course (MOOC) run on edX.org during summer 2014. We compare the efficacy of physics homework problems: (1) traditional physics problems involving many skills, (2) deliberate-practice activities that train individual skills using the drag-and-drop format, and (3) analogous deliberate ...
متن کاملHow to Draw Tropical Planes
The tropical Grassmannian parameterizes tropicalizations of ordinary linear spaces, while the Dressian parameterizes all tropical linear spaces in TP. We study these parameter spaces and we compute them explicitly for n ≤ 7. Planes are identified with matroid subdivisions and with arrangements of trees. These representations are then used to draw pictures.
